A couple of weeks ago, the second grade teachers kicked off the Social Studies Continent Unit with a play called The Wedding Story. In the play, Mr. North America and Miss South America fall in love and get married (and Miss South America doesn't even have to change her last name). They fly to Europe for their honeymoon. While in Europe they have four children-Antarctica, Australia, Africa, and Asia.
During the play, each character (Mr. North America, Miss South America, Europe, Antarctica, Australia, Africa, and Asia) revealed to the audience what was great about their continent. The students learned a lot of facts such as what landmarks, oceans, mountain ranges, interesting animals, and what rivers could be found when visiting their continent. It was a fun way to get the children excited and interested in wanting to learn more about our world!
Since I was Europe in the play, I was in charge of teaching my students all about Europe. The class also had to build clay models of Europe's landmarks, rivers, mountain range, animals, and the countries within Europe. Other classes were in charge of making models of their continent. The models will be shared with the other grade 2 classes when they take their passport and travel to a new continent every Thursday!
The kids have been to 3 out of the seven continents so far! Their trip started in Europe, then they went to Antarctica to experience the cold weather, and yesterday they went to Australia! Good day mate!
Please take the time to ask your son/daughter what they have learned so far! Also, please visit the www.wrentham.k12.ma.us to see The Wedding Story video on the front page. It should be posted within the next couple of days.
