What was his/her middle name? Did he/she have any pets? When did he/she die?

This week we had Biography presentations.  The students did a fabulous job presenting. We heard from athletes, presidents, musicians, and inventors. The effort that was put forth with their outfits and posters were impressive!
Also, the audience did a great job listening attentively while their classmates presented. Typical questions were asked such as, "When did he/she die?", "Did he/she have any pets?", and "What was his/her middle name?"
Thank you for your support from home in making these presentations successful!
I hope everyone has an awesome April vacation!

And that's the wedding story! All because two people fell in love!

Mr. North America and Miss South America

request the honour of your presence

at their marriage

Monday the sixteenth of March

at eight forty-five in the morning

Vogel Auditorium

120 Taunton Street

Wrentham, MA 02093
A couple of weeks ago, the second grade teachers kicked off the Social Studies Continent Unit with a play called The Wedding Story.  In the play, Mr. North America and Miss South America fall in love and get married (and Miss South America doesn't even have to change her last name). They fly to Europe for their honeymoon. While in Europe they have four children-Antarctica, Australia, Africa, and Asia.

During the play, each character (Mr. North America, Miss South America, Europe, Antarctica, Australia, Africa, and Asia) revealed to the audience what was great about their continent.  The students learned a lot of facts such as what landmarks, oceans, mountain ranges, interesting animals, and what rivers could be found when visiting their continent.  It was a fun way to get the children excited and interested in wanting to learn more about our world!

Since I was Europe in the play, I was in charge of teaching my students all about Europe. The class also had to build clay models of Europe's landmarks, rivers, mountain range, animals, and the countries within Europe. Other classes were in charge of making models of their continent. The models will be shared with the other grade 2 classes when they take their passport and travel to a new continent every Thursday!

The kids have been to 3 out of the seven continents so far! Their trip started in Europe, then they went to Antarctica to experience the cold weather, and yesterday they went to Australia! Good day mate!

Please take the time to ask your son/daughter what they have learned so far! Also, please visit the www.wrentham.k12.ma.us to see The Wedding Story video on the front page. It should be posted within the next couple of days.

Is it a flinker?

Yesterday was our field trip to the Discovery Museum. While there, the kids were able to explore two floors and participate in a hands-on workshop. Whether they were investigating the different exhibits or taking part in the scientific method, one of the common themes that ran through the day was the importance of teamwork. They had to work together to rebuild a broken puzzle, make a tornado form, and create a harmonograph. In the workshop, they learned the term flinker (an object that is not a floater or a sinker, but a bit of both) and had to work together to create a boat out of various materials to safely transport penny people and food across Boston Harbor, while carrying a treasure home. During this part of the day, the adults were asked to sit back and enjoy the show. This gave us an opportunity to observe things such as: who were the leaders, who listened well to solve the problem, who had other plans that were different than their friends, and who was flexible for the greater good of the team. Needless to say, this was a great learning opportunity for the children. They were able to reflect on what worked well and what didn't. Hopefully the next time teamwork comes into play, this experience will be fresh their minds and they will make good choices that help their group get closer to their goal.
