Pencil Hoarders!

I know I already posted something today, but I could not pass up this opportunity!  We are covering standard 2.MD.9 which focuses on the students learning how to create and read a line plot using data. Today's data was PENCILS! I asked the students to take out all of the pencils that were inside their desks. We collected the data, plotted the number of pencils they each had, and then added up the total number of pencils.  I will start off by saying one child had 31 pencils!!!!!!  Are you ready for the total number?
215!!!!!
We have a case of pencil hoarders in 2Pitman!
Check out the paper that is coming home today to see for yourselves!

Measuring Penny

This week the students got to measure a dog!
I read them the story Measuring Penny, which is a story about a girl who decides to use her dog to complete her measuring homework. She uses a variety of measuring units (inches, pounds, cups, time, etc.) to complete her assignment. After listening to Measuring Penny, the students got to create their very own Penny!  Since there is not much time for arts and crafts these days, the kids had a blast and were psyched when I pulled out the construction paper! They made a Penny and then of course had to measure their pooches body parts.
Check out them working away!

Lights, Camera, Action!

The students did such a great job performing in their play! It takes a brave soul to perform in front of all of those people! They were amazing being on center stage under the lights! We had some future actors and actresses that certainly brought the action! Unfortunately, I haven't realized until now, that my picture quality is poor (I borrowed my friends Nikon D5100 this weekend- it's now my dream camera), but regardless I have some pictures to share! They will have to do until I can afford the dream! :)
Thanks again for attending and being so supportive!

If you happened to video your child play, please try to send me the file! Thanks!

Mealworms are awesome?

It's my favorite time of the year- having insects in my room! I'm totally kidding! It creeps me out! After school when I lock up the door to go home, I pray that those creepy crawlers stay in their habitat and the next day I don't walk into an insect party!

In saying that, it is truly so fun for the children to have the mealworms in class. They give them names, take care of them, and really get to know their desk mates. Throughout the insect unit the students will be learning about the life cycle, collecting data, making observations, and even making their own insect!

When I introduce the unit, I tell the students there is a BIG secret.  The secret is that the mealworms turn into beetles. As you can imagine, this is such a HUGE surprise when it happens. They learn so much about the life cycle and are truly amazed to watch it happen right in front of their own eyes! If the secret is ruined for them, they miss out on the big finale. Please talk to your child, feel out if they know the secret, and if they do, please ask them to keep it to themselves. Also, if they don't know the secret and their older sibling does, please bribe their older brother or sister into not saying a word!
I appreciate your support with this!

Below are pictures of the students setting up their buddies' habitat!
