I started off the day by telling the students they were going to participate in a project having to do with themselves. What second graders doesn't like to talk about himself/herself? Let's just say they were engaged RIGHT AWAY and it was a good motivator! Their mission today was to complete several pages in a Non-fiction Text Feature book all about them. They got right to work and I even heard a student say, "This is awesome!" This is an ongoing project that will be sure to help them to understand and discover the importance and significance of text features! Check out the pictures below!
One of our comprehension skills this week was main idea. This skill can be challenging for the students to understand, so we will continuously discuss this concept. The students practiced main idea by creating a table out of paper. The top of the table (the most important part) was the main idea. The legs of the table were the supporting details. We discussed that without the legs, the table would have no support- same with the main idea. They also used Clowning Around with Main Idea to practice. Check out the pictures below.
